Here's the list of women directed and women written films that got picked up out of Sundance. I'm sure there will be more to come.

Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue 2012

At least they are all dressed.  But all the satin kind of reminds me of a brothel.  Thw women on the power panel which is the actual cover are Rooney Mara, Mia Wasikowska, Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain.  And Jennifer Lawrence is in the top center.  Smart of them to include the awesome Adepero Oduye.

The Sundance Institute and Women in Film Team Up to Get More Women Filmmakers Working in Hollywood

Finally some organizations have stepped up and stood up and committed resources to work towards improving the amount of female filmmakers working in the business.  Women in Film and the Sundance Institute are going to track female filmmakers who show their films at Sundance to get a sense of the trajectory that these directors go on after they leave the festival.

What Bigelow Effect? Number of Women Directors in Hollywood Falls to 5 Percent

The Oscar nominations this morning give us another year where there are no women directors included in the list. This year we won't see Kathryn Bigelow up on the stage giving out the best director award to the next winner. When she won two years ago there was much hope that the numbers of women directing in Hollywood would get better.

Hester Street Directed by Joan Micklin Silver Among Films Added to National Film Registry

Each year 25 films are added by the Library of Congress to the National Film Registry. This year included in the list is the ground breaking film Hester Street directed by Joan Micklin Silver. Silver was one of the first women to start directing in the 1970s after a period of years where there were hardly any female directors. She is a true pioneer. She's also the director of one of my favorite films Crossing Delancey.

Announcing the 2nd Annual Athena Film Festival: a Celebration of Women and Leadership

For those of you who don't know, I am the artistic director and co-founder of the awesome (if I do say so myself) Athena Film Festival.  We will launch year two on February 9.  We will be announcing the awardees and the films over the next two months.

The fact that we are going into year two is news in itself.  In this difficult economic times raising money and support for a film festival about women's leadership is challenging.  I am so proud to be working with a great community of people at Barnard College -- especially my co-founder Kitty Kolbert and the college's President Debora Spar -- who believe in this effort.

Brett Ratner Illustrates Sexism Problem in Hollywood

The Brett Ratner Oscar debacle does not exist in a vacuum.  Think about it.  What's the biggest news in politics?  Herman Cain trying to wriggle his campaign out of the fact that he is a serial sexual harrasser.  I am sadly surprised that the tone of his denials remind me of the conversation started by Anita Hill when she spoke out against Clarence Thomas 20 years ago.  Did we not learn anything from that experience?

It's true that sexual harrassment and sexist comments are two different things.  One is illegal and one is unacceptable.  But these men in power give us an opportunity to remind ourselves that these things happen each and every day to many women.  Sexist comments breed a hostile work environment.  Anyone who has experienced it knows that it is a slippery and not very far slope from the talk to the actual harassment.

The Academy Has a Brett Ratner Problem

Oh boy does the Academy have a public relations problem and that problem is the guy they hired to produce the show Brett Ratner.  One of the problems they have with him is that he has become the story and that is going to dog the whole awards season.  People are going to be waiting to hear what sexist, racist or homophobic thing that will come out of his mouth.  And he is such an equal opportunity offender that it won't take too long for him to fuel the fire.  Hey he's batitng three for three having made a homophobic, sexist and racist remark all in the last couple of days.
