Producer Debra Martin Chase has teamed up with The Game showrunners and creators Mara Brock Akil and her husband Salim Akil to produce a remake of the 1976 film Sparkle which originally starred Irene Cara. The film is loosely based on the story of the Supremes and there are three plum roles for African American actresses in this remake. Kind of feels like it could be a lot like Dreamgirls which was a big hit. Maybe there are even roles for both Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce in this film too.
Here's a quote from Debra Martin Chase:
I have been working for many years to remake Sparkle. It is one of my favorite movies and obviously I love to produce musicals--this will be my sixth. With Mara and Salim on board we have the right team and Michael Lynton and DeVon Franklin at Sony are very passionate about the movie. The situation is very, very promising.
Mara Brock Akil will write the script and Salim will direct. He makes his feature directing debut in May with Jumping the Broom starring Angela Bassett. The Akil's are very hot now that they have taken The Game which was cancelled on CW and remade it into a hit on BET.
