Producer Debra Martin Chase has teamed up with The Game showrunners and creators Mara Brock Akil and her husband Salim Akil to produce a remake of the 1976 film Sparkle which originally starred Irene Cara. The film is loosely based on the story of the Supremes and there are three plum roles for African American actresses in this remake. Kind of feels like it could be a lot like Dreamgirls which was a big hit. Maybe there are even roles for both Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce in this film too.

Here's a quote from Debra Martin Chase:

I have been working for many years to remake Sparkle. It is one of my favorite movies and obviously I love to produce musicals--this will be my sixth. With Mara and Salim on board we have the right team and Michael Lynton and DeVon Franklin at Sony are very passionate about the movie. The situation is very, very promising.

Mara Brock Akil will write the script and Salim will direct. He makes his feature directing debut in May with Jumping the Broom starring Angela Bassett. The Akil's are very hot now that they have taken The Game which was cancelled on CW and remade it into a hit on BET.

Irene was amazing in this role, and young like 20 , they should cast young females to keep it true to the original someone like Keke Palmer, who by the way is also a great actress and singer, she is in a new movie with Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah coming out in 2012 where she is singing gospel, word is she is a great singer, can't autotune gospel, depending on how well that movies does they should consider her and going younger than Beyounce

Why remake it? Debra you cant write you own?
Leave it ALONE. DrG was good bc it was never a movie, only a play. LEAVE SPARKLE ALONE.

Sparkle was a different movie from dream girls. Yes, they were both singing groups but Sparkle was a bit edgier. You should take a look at the film. But I hope they don't put Beyonce in such a powerful role, she not right for it.
