Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival took place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Berlinale Women Directors: Meet Feo Aladag

"[I wanted to] break the taboo of telling a story about German soldiers deployed to a war-torn country [Afghanistan. The Third Reich dominates storytelling in German cinema in regards to Germany's soldiers. It seemed time to move beyond the trauma."

Berlinale Dispatch 1: Off the Plane and Into the Competition

Feo Aladag takes a huge step forward with "In Between Worlds," her second feature. I was very much a fan of her first film "When We Leave," which dealt with "honor killings," but the scope and structure of this film is much larger and more complex. Here she ponders issues of masculinity, war, and Germany's place in a changing world.

Four Women Directors Will Compete for 2014 Berlinale's Golden Bear

Austrian Feo Aladag, Iranian-Austrian Sudabeh Mortezai, and Argentine Celina Murga will compete for the top prize at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.
