Krysten Ritter, Margo Martindale and Melanie Lynskey Nab New Pilots

Some of our favorite underappreciated actresses have been cast in pilots for the upcoming Fall TV season. The hilarious Krysten Ritter of the dearly departed Apartment 23 has been cast as the lead in Leslye Headland’s Assistance, a talent combination that is almost too perfect. The terrific Margo Martindale has been cast in a new CBS comedy pilot and Melanie Lynskey has landed a role in the new HBO comedy from the Duplass Brothers.

2013 Women-Created TV Pilots

News

It’s prime pilot season for the networks. After all the news that’s been coming out in the last six months or so about women-created shows, we wanted to see how that’s holding up with official announcements. Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter’s amazing and extensive guide of all the pilots announced thus far, we have a rough idea. So far, The CW leads with 6 women-created shows on their roster. NBC has 4 and Fox, CBS and ABC are tied for last place with only 3 women-created shows. We will continue to update as more shows are announced.

While it might be tempting to compare Bachelorette to Bridesmaids because they are both about women and weddings - you would be doing so at your peril. Whereas Bridesmaids was about the utter collapse and rebirth of a woman, Bachelorette is about a bunch of hedonistic, awful high school friends who convene in NYC for the wedding of a classmate. The women -- played by Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher and Lizzy Caplan -- are mortified (though Kirsten Dunst is the most mortified) that the first of their high school friends to get married is overweight Becky played by a restrained Rebel Wilson. To top it off, she's marrying a really hot guy.

The LA Times Talks to Three Women Directors - Where is the Female Equivalent of Woody Allen?

Check out the LA Times piece on Ava DuVernay, Jullie Delpy and Leslye Headland. While things still suck for women directors, it kind of feels like the conversation is shifting. Maybe I am being too optimistic, but I am forever hopeful. I will be interested to see the statistics at the end of 2012 to see if any movement has been made. Here at Women and Hollywood we are keeping track of all the films released directed by women on pinterest. Right now it is just features. We will also work on a documentary plage. Please let us know if we missed any films. We will update as often as possible.

This is based on the play by Leslye Headland and premiered at Sundance in January. The more I see information about this movie, the more I want to see it. I am also excited to see more of Rebel Wilson who was hysterical in her scene in Bridesmaids.

Locarno Film Festival Lineup: 2 Women Directed Films In Competition

On Wednesday, the Locarno Film Festival announced its lineup for in-competition films and the Piazza Grande program. Held from August 1-11, Locarno is one of the world’s oldest film festivals, currently in its 65th year.
