Women and Hollywood

Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival will take place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

2012 Houston Cinema Arts Festival Focuses on Women Directors

The Houston Cinema Arts Society recently announced their lineup for the 2012 Houston Cinema Arts Festival. This year in honor of the 40th anniversary of Women Make Movies, the festival is emphasizing women directors. Both the opening and closing films of the festival are directed by women. Opening up the festival is Liz Garbus’s documentary on Marilyn Monroe, Love, Marilyn. And closing out the festival is Lisa Immordino Vreeland’s documentary on Diana Vreeland, Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel.

Lisa Immordino Vreeland loved Diana Vreeland before she married her grandson. Even though they never met she paints a glorious portrait of a unique woman who was a driving force in the fashion and cultural world in NY in the 50s and 60s. She was the editor of Harper's Bazaar for 25 years and then did a stint at Vogue and then at 70 she put the Met's Costume Institute on the map. Her energy and enthusiasm is infectious as is this engrossing documentary.
