Women and Hollywood

Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival will take place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Interview with Liz Garbus - Director of Love, Marilyn

Interviews

Liz Garbus takes a well worn subject -- Marilyn Monroe -- and brings a whole new substance and understanding to this woman through her own words. Using material that has never before been seen or heard, Garbus provides a glimpse into this complicated and very misunderstood woman using well known actors like Viola Davis, Ellen Burstyn (who knew Marilyn) and Lindsay Lohan (what must have Lindsay been thinking reading the words of a woman who died so untimely) among many others. A truly interesting and engaging film. The film opens to today for a one week qualifying run and will air on HBO in 2013.

The Houston Cinema Arts Society recently announced their lineup for the 2012 Houston Cinema Arts Festival. This year in honor of the 40th anniversary of Women Make Movies, the festival is emphasizing women directors. Both the opening and closing films of the festival are directed by women. Opening up the festival is Liz Garbus’s documentary on Marilyn Monroe, Love, Marilyn. And closing out the festival is Lisa Immordino Vreeland’s documentary on Diana Vreeland, Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel.

Festivals

The Toronto Film Festival opens tonight. Over the next 10 days there will be a couple of hundred movies to be seen. This is one festival where you can make a decision to see films by women and see plenty of films. There are some extraordinarily high profile female directors opening films at the festival.

HBO To Screen Many Docs by Women This Summer

HBO announced their summer documentary lineup and there are many great looking women directed films -- two from Liz Garbus -- and others including one about Gloria Steinem directed by men. The 11 week series begins June 6.
