Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 5th annual festival will take place from February 5-8, 2015 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

All Five Docs Nominated for Cinema Eye’s Top Prize Directed or Produced by a Woman

For the first time in the award’s history, all five of the features competing for the “Best Documentary” prize were either directed or produced by a woman. Female directors also comprised the majority of the “Best Director” nominations, as well as Cinema Eye’s inaugural award for Nonfiction Films Made for Television.

After Tiller Expands Across the Nation

Lana Wilson and Martha Shane's deeply affecting and discourse changing documentary, After Tiller, is about the current state of late-term abortions after the murder of Dr. George Tiller in 2009. The documentary follows Tiller's colleagues, the four remaining doctors who will perform late-term abortions in the country.

Sundance News: Women In Film Awards Grants to Jordana Spiro, Martha Shane and Lana Wilson

During its 7th annual Sundance Filmmakers panel, Women In Film - Los Angeles awarded $30,000 in grants to women filmmakers. Jordana Spiro, director of Skin, received the Women In Film/CalmDown Productions Grant and Martha Shane & Lana Wilson, directors of After Tiller, received the Women In Film Documentary Grant.
