Women and Hollywood
Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry. She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival will take place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC. Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.Email Melissa

Tribeca Film Festival Announces 2013 Lineup: Women Directors
This year’s Tribeca Film Festival announcement is fantastic for both films directed by women and written by. The festival, in its 12th year, will be hosted in locations around New York City from April 17-28.

The Toronto Experience - Part One
Greetings from the Toronto Film Festival. I touched down on Thursday afternoon and since that moment this has been a serious whirlwind. Since it is my second year I understand is the key is pace and endurance. You have to sprint through the first weekend when everyone in the industry is in town for the big premieres and there are many parties and events to attend. I have gone non-stop for over three days and haven't had a moment to write anything.

TIFF Preview: The Female Directing Masters Playing at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival
The Toronto Film Festival opens tonight. Over the next 10 days there will be a couple of hundred movies to be seen. This is one festival where you can make a decision to see films by women and see plenty of films. There are some extraordinarily high profile female directors opening films at the festival.

Women Directors Abound at the Venice Film Festival
The news on the prevalence of women directors coming out out of the Venice Film Festival is in stark contrast to the different conversation that came out of Cannes just several months ago. Festival director Alberto Barbera claims that they just programed the movies and then afterwards realized that about 30% of the movies they picked were directed by women. Here's what he said:

4 Women Directors in Competition at 2012 Venice International Film Festival
Contrary to the folks at Cannes who seem to not be able to find any women directed movies for their competition, Alberto Barbara has gotten 4 films with women directors (or co-directors) in the competition.

First Toronto 2012 Lineup News - Women Directors

Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist to Open The Venice Film Festival
Mira Nair's new film The Reluctant Fundamentalist will open the 69th Venice Film Festival on August 29th. It will screen out of competition.

Announcing the 2nd Annual Athena Film Festival: a Celebration of Women and Leadership
The fact that we are going into year two is news in itself. In this difficult economic times raising money and support for a film festival about women's leadership is challenging. I am so proud to be working with a great community of people at Barnard College -- especially my co-founder Kitty Kolbert and the college's President Debora Spar -- who believe in this effort.

EW Picks the 25 Top Working Directors
EW published a list of the "top" 25 working directors and they define top as "most talented, in-demand filmmakers behind the camera today". Not surprisingly, only one woman, Kathryn Bigelow makes it to the list at number 15.
