Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival took place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Sundance's Women in Film Event Calls Out Hollywood Sexism, Awards $32k in Grants

There was apparently one running theme at the eighth Women in Film panel hosted by the Sundance Film Festival: entrenched industry sexism. Director Rory Kennedy (Last Days in Vietnam) declared, "We live in a sexist world and Hollywood is at the heart of it."

3 of 15 Documentaries on Oscar Shortlist Directed by Women

Yesterday, the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences released the 15 films on the short list in the Documentary feature category for this year’s Oscars. Only three films on the shortlist are directed by women. That's just 20%.

Good News: Women Directed and Women Written Films Fill Sundance Premiere Section

While there weren't enough films directed and written by women in the competition as I would have hoped, the list of premieres looks at bit different.  Check out the description for Bachelorette- could it be any more like Bridesmaids?  It better be good cause if this starts a trend of more crappy wedding films...
