A coming of age story, set during the Cold War, best friends Ginger (Elle Fanning) and Rosa (Alice Englert) are inseparable until both step outside of their assigned roles within their friendship to disastrous results.

In my favorite Anne Sexton poem “Rowing,” one line in particular always sticks out to me: “I wore rubies and bought tomatoes/and now, in my middle age/about nineteen in the head I'd say/I am rowing, I am rowing.” While the characters in Sally Potter’s terrific Ginger and Rosa (superbly played by Elle Fanning and Alice Englert) are 16—the feeling of equal parts exhilaration and complete anguish of being a teenage girl permeates to its core. It echoes Sexton’s sentiment wholeheartedly, that we want youth when we are adults and want to be adults when we are young.

After the dust settles, Ginger and Rosa is going to turn out to be one of my the highlights of the festival. Sally Potter, the brilliant director of Orlando has written and directed a truly accessible coming of age story set during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. It's the story of two sixteen year old girls Ginger (Elle Fanning) and Rosa (Alice Englert - Jane Campion's daughter) who are no longer girls but, of course, not yet women. Ginger's parents, the academic philandering narcissist Roland (Alessandro Nivola) and frustrated painter Natalie (Christina Hendricks) are progressive parents giving Ginger a lot of freedom, and while her friend Rosa spends her time exploring her budding sexuality, Ginger on the other hand, is very focused on the fact that the world is on the brink of nuclear disaster. She attends meetings and marches which is not typical for a 16 year old and she relays the fears that everyone was feeling at that moment.

The Toronto Experience - Part One

News

Greetings from the Toronto Film Festival. I touched down on Thursday afternoon and since that moment this has been a serious whirlwind. Since it is my second year I understand is the key is pace and endurance. You have to sprint through the first weekend when everyone in the industry is in town for the big premieres and there are many parties and events to attend. I have gone non-stop for over three days and haven't had a moment to write anything.

The Toronto Film Festival opens tonight. Over the next 10 days there will be a couple of hundred movies to be seen. This is one festival where you can make a decision to see films by women and see plenty of films. There are some extraordinarily high profile female directors opening films at the festival.
