Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival took place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

I am a man, and this is an article concerning female sexuality, at least in part. I feel that should be noted immediately, lest anyone take it as an unnoticed irony rather than a relevant starting point. While I don't see my gender as fatally problematic either to the authorship of this article or this column in general, it is far from irrelevant.

Sundance Interview Rerun: Concussion - Directed by Stacie Passon, Produced by Rose Troche, Starring Robin Weigert

Concussion was one of my favorite movies at Sundance this year. It was truly a revelation. Robin Weigert who we have seen for so many years as a supporting character in shows like Deadwood, takes the lead as a suburban lesbian mom whose life has become rote.

Women Directed Film Winners in Berlin

This weekend, the 2013 Berlinale drew to a close and the major awards went to male directed films about strong women. The talk throughout the week was about the Romanian film Child's Play and the Chilean film Gloria. Child's Play won the Golden Bear and Paulina Garcia won the best actress for Gloria.

Jane Campion and Stacie Passon's Films Announced in Berlin Line Up

Last week, the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival announced more films to their lineup. Among the women directed films include Stacie Passon’s Concussion, which premiered at Sundance (and Melissa loved.  She will have an interview with Stacie soon.) Jane Campion’s 6 hour mini-series, Top of the Lake, starring Elisabeth Moss will also screen at the festival as well.
