Susanne Bier's Love Is All You Need follows Ida (Trine Dyrholm), who recently has lost her hair to cancer and then finds out her husband is having an affair. She travels to Italy for her daughter's wedding and meets Philip (Pierce Brosnan) who is the father of the groom. The two decide to travel together and sparks fly. Love Is All You Need will have a limited release in the U.S. on May 3rd.

We saw Susanne Biers' follow-up film to her Academy Award winning In a Better World at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival where we interviewed the director. Here is a new trailer. As of now there is no North American release date but it will be in 2013.

At the Toronto Film Festival you see a lot of heavy movies really early in the morning. Love is All You Need was a most welcome respite from the intensity that was around at the festival. Academy Award winning director Susanne Bier operating at the top of her game goes in a completely different direction with this lush (it takes place in Italy) and romantic piece that stars Pierce Brosnan and Trine Dyrholm as people from two different worlds who happen to be the parents of a couple about to get married in a villa in Italy. The movie is so beautifully shot that it made my pine for the blue skies of Italy. The story is way more complex than a typical romantic comedy but it is also very accessible and because of Pierce Brosnan (who thankfully does not sing) this film will play even wider in the English speaking world. This was one of the films I really liked at the festival.

The Toronto Experience - Part One

News

Greetings from the Toronto Film Festival. I touched down on Thursday afternoon and since that moment this has been a serious whirlwind. Since it is my second year I understand is the key is pace and endurance. You have to sprint through the first weekend when everyone in the industry is in town for the big premieres and there are many parties and events to attend. I have gone non-stop for over three days and haven't had a moment to write anything.

The Depressing Reality of Women Directed Films in 2012

I really wish I wasn't writing this but over the last couple of days it has become clear to me that 2012 could be another depressing year for women directed films. I started feeling sad last week when I was leafing through page after page of the Rentrak list of films with release dates in 2012 and had a hard time finding any women directed films on the list. I know that list is always a work in progress, but still it was depressing.

We all know that only one woman -- Kathryn Bigelow (and it has been a long time since we uttered her name) -- has won the best director honors. But there have been other women acknowledged for their films in the best foreign language category. Marleen Gorris won for Antonia's Line. Caroline Link won for Nowhere in Africa. And just last year Susanne Bier won for In a Better World.

In My Humble Opinion- The Best Female Directed Films of 2011

It goes without saying that women made all kinds of films this year. But the reality is that most made indie films. Only a couple made studio films. And the numbers of women directing films is still abysmally low.

But even in their small numbers women are making waves. Here are some highlights:

Jennifer Yuh Nelson made a hugely successful animated film Kung Fu Panda 2 and now she is the highest grossing female director taking the title from Phyllida Lloyd who this year gave us Meryl Streep's tour de force in The Iron Lady.

Several actresses went behind the camera for the first time including Vera Farmiga (Higher Ground) and Angelina Jolie (In the Land of Blood and Honey). Jodie Foster made The Beaver which unfortunately was stuck with the Mel Gibson whose baggage dragged down a very interesting film.
