Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival took place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Sundance's Women in Film Event Calls Out Hollywood Sexism, Awards $32k in Grants

There was apparently one running theme at the eighth Women in Film panel hosted by the Sundance Film Festival: entrenched industry sexism. Director Rory Kennedy (Last Days in Vietnam) declared, "We live in a sexist world and Hollywood is at the heart of it."

Sundance Women Directors: Meet Valerie Veatch

"I was in Rome when the BBC ran a story about a young couple in Korea who were on trial and suffering from 'Internet Addiction.' At the time it struck me as a very poignant moment where the virtual world was impacting the real world. This project is an opportunity to have a dialogue around the social impact of emerging internet technologies."

Cross-Post: Women Kicking It on Kickstarter!

Kickstarter, called "the people's NEA" by The New York Times, recently sent out their 2011 round-up of success stories on their crowdsourced fundraising site, with women filmmakers taking significant applause on the roster, including Dee Rees' Pariah.
