Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival will take place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

This Sunday, The New York Times did a wonderful profile of Melissa McCarthy.  She's been well on her way to superstardom since her breakout performance in Bridesmaids. McCarthy is currently co-directing and starring in Tammy, a film that she co-wrote with her husband/writing partner Ben Falcone.

Katie Dippold Signs 7-Figure Deal With Chernin Entertainment

Katie Dippold's writing future just got a little brighter.  Her film The Heat, directed by Bridemaids' Paul Feig and starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy hasn't even hit theaters yet, the confidence that both Chernin Entertainment and Fox have in the film -- specifically moving the film smack dab into blockbuster season-- have made Dippold a hot commodity.

The Heat, written by Katie Dippold and directed by Bridesmaids director Paul Feig brings together two stars Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock as a tough Boston cop and uptight FBI agent respectively who are assigned to work together to bring down a drug lord. Neither has had much luck in working well with their co-workers let alone personal friendships.
