Women and Hollywood

Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival will take place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

I readily admit I did not read The Host. I couldn't face it after immersing myself in all things Twilight while researching my book Seduced by Twilight. I started it, but less than 20 pages in I couldn't stomach any more of Stephenie Meyer's purple, flaccid prose. No, I agree with Nicki Gerlach--that "Meyer is not a particularly concise or elegant writer, never saying in one sentence what she could hammer at for three."

Based on Stephenie Meyer's non-Twilight novel, The Host follows Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) whose body is taken over by invading aliens (led by Diane Kruger). Instead of succumbing to the alien soul in her body, Melanie and "Wanda," set out to set the humans of the world free instead of destroying earth.
