Mama, which was released on Friday, easily took the number one spot with a projected $33.2 million. With male-driven action films starring big actors like Mark Wahlberg and Arnold Schwarzenegger expected to open big, Mama’s box office numbers were a surprise.
Zero Dark Thirty, which Chastain won the Golden Globe for last week, held steady in the number 2 spot with a projected four day weekend total of $21.4 million. An actress holding both the top box office slots is rare at best, so it’s exciting to see Chastain’s work get recognition from audiences.
