Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo

In news that's almost too good to be true, Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures announced that it would develop a TV series about Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo.

Both stars were widely rumored to be bisexual, which adds another potentially interesting layer to the as-yet untitled project. Set during Hollywood's Golden Age, the show would explore Dietrich and Garbo's relationships with topliners like John Gilbert, Mercedes de Acosta, Tallulah Bankhead, Alla Nazimova, Barbara Stanwyck, Cary Grant and John Wayne.

The would-be showrunners are Angela Robinson (True BloodHung) and Alex Kondrake (The L WordHung).

Name your fantasy casting choices in the comments.

Uma Thurman should definitely play Marlene as she resembles her in full Dietrich regalia...
there are lots of photos online of Uma channelling Dietrich, she is exactly a dead ringer...
plus Uma is a great actress.

Your choices for which which of the two? Diane Kruger would also definitely be a great choice for MD.

I could not be more excited about the possibility of these projects! I would actually go with a German and Swedish actress so that they get their English with German or Swedish inflections right. Alexandra Maria Lara for Marlene and for Garbo Noomi Rapace of course!

No one could ever do Garbo or Dietrich justice. I mean, maybe, just maybe Cate Blanchett or Rooney Mara could do something with this, but even at the top of their game the performance (and the project in general) would still look uber-trashy to me. Garbo would find this kind of project insulting, and I'm sure Dietrich would feel the same. Besides, Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich deserve something WAY better than a freakin' television show! And don't give me that "golden age of television" crap, because no, it's not. Television will always be coach and cinema will always be first class.

While it's a great idea and would probably be immensely entertaining, I don't think anyone could actually fit these roles, ultimately dooming the project.

Megan's a smart woman, but this is a poor move unless she gets absolutely everything right.

I second Brandi! Best idea ever!
    Cate Blanchett as Lili Marlene?
    Emma Thompson as Greta Garbo?
Bless Megan Ellison and her stacks of moolah!

I could see Keira Knightley as Greta Garbo! And maybe Chloe Sevigny for Marlene Dietrich. This show sounds great!

I'm surprised my comment was so rage inducing lmfao. Saying Keira Knightley is a terrible actress is a matter of opinion. She's an Academy Award nominated actress and critically acclaimed. She and Garbo both tackled the role of Anna Karenina which is why she came to mind as a casting idea. I also just think that Knightley could portray her physically and has a Garbo-esque quality. Again, these ideas are all just opinions, and they were asked for in the article. It's being a poor sport to yell at someone over their opinion and insult them because their idea contradicts yours. God, are manners and common courtesy dead? People can get awfully vicious when they have a computer screen to hide behind.

@SAM : Wow.... I don't think I've ever been this enraged by a comment on here, like ever. Bravo, dude! Really, I think I popped a blood vessel in my eye just from reading the Garbo portion of your comment. Keira Knightley!? OF ALL THE F**KIN' ACTRESSES OUT THERE.... you'd go with Keira "usually gives a less wooden performance than Natalie Portman" Knightley to play screen goddess Greta Garbo?? WOW, REALLY?? OKAY. Well, your casting opinions SUCK.

This sounds AMAZING. SO AMAZING!! I was waiting for a powerful, female-centric drama on parr with Breaking Bad or Walking Dead. This has the potential to be that show! Casting will be difficult. Few actresses working today have the aura of a Garbo or a Dietrich. Who can portray that kind of confident sensuality without it looking forced? No one comes to mind.
