With one fell swoop the team of men and women who program the New York Film Festival stuck a pin in the eye of the dudes at Cannes by programming seven, yes seven films directed by women at the upcoming New York Film Festival.  That's almost 22%.  The total amount of films being screened in 32, and one of the women directors is a male-female collaboration.

Now the NYFF is not perfect.  They have given all the gala slots to male directed films.  But I can't cry too much when they have made a real concerted effort to include a wide diversity of women on their program.

Here are the women directed films:

ARAF – SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN - Director: Yeşim Ustaoğlu
CAMILLE REWINDS (Camille redouble) - Director: Noémie Lvovsky
FILL THE VOID (Lemale et ha'halal) - Director: Rama Burshtein
GINGER AND ROSA - Director: Sally Potter
LEVIATHAN - Directors: Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel
LINES OF WELLINGTON (Linhas de Wellington) - Director: Valeria Sarmiento
MEMORIES LOOK AT ME (Ji Yi Wang Zhe Wo) - Director: Song Fang

Here is the full lineup.  The festival kicks off on September 28th and runs through October 14th.
