Only 16% of Locarno Film Fest Lineup Directed by Women

The Swiss festival will honor Agnes Varda, Mia Farrow, and Juliette Binoche this year.

Less than one out of every six features screened in the major programs at the 67th Locarno International Film Festival (August 6-16) will be directed by a woman. 

Of the 56 films playing at the Piazza Grande ("films with a powerful impact), in competition (Concorso internazionale), in competition as first or second works (Concorso Cineasti del presente), or as part of the Signs of Life sidebar (for experimental films), a paltry nine are from female filmmakers. 

As previously announced, Agnes Varda will receive a lifetime achievement award from the festival this year. A selection of her films will also be screened at Locarno. Also honored for their film work will be Juliette Binoche and Mia Farrow.
