Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival took place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Women Attain Their Highest Level of Leadership at the Academy

Each year the Academy votes in members of the governors board. The board members represent each of the Academy's 16 branches which includes the newly created costume designers branch. As of this year there are three board members for each branch. Members must be re-elected when their terms are up, and can serve three consecutive terms and then they are termed out.

Kathleen Kennedy Accepts 2013 Pioneer of the Year Award at CinemaCon

As we previously reported, Kathleen Kennedy was tapped to receive the Pioneer of the Year award at the Will Rogers Motion Pictures Pioneers dinner at CinemaCon. Kennedy became only the second woman to ever receive the award. The first, Sherry Lansing, sent Kennedy her congratulations.

Kathleen Kennedy Moves to Disney

Back in June we reported that Kathleen Kennedy had been named co-chair of LucasFilms. Word came last week that LucasFilm has now been bought by Disney for over $4 billion dollars, and Kennedy will be running her studio alongside the other beasts that Disney owns Marvel and Pixar.

Four Women Producers Included in List for PGA's Top Honor - Kathleen Kennedy Nominated for Two Awards

The Producer's Guild of America announced their nominees for top awards yesterday and four women are included on the list for the top honor which is the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer Of The Year Award In Theatrical Motion Pictures.
