Fox Searchlight just acquired the worldwide rights to Cheryl Strayed's critically acclaimed and bestselling memoir Wild. Reese Witherspoon is set to star and produce.

The film is about Strayed who in her 20s felt she had lost everything. Her mother passed away, her family was all over the place and her marriage fell apart. At 26, she decided to hike 1,000 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail -- through the Mojave desert to Washington state -- alone.

Witherspoon's production company, Pacific Standard with Bruna Papandrea alongside River Road Entertainment's Bill Pohlad will be producing. Filming is set to begin in the late fall. A director has not been chosen yet.  Wonder if they will pick a woman to direct?

I think this is going to be a fantastic film and I cannot wait to see it! I think this movie will be incredibly empowering for women. I think Reese is an excellent person to play this part, I have always admired her work and I think she's a great actor. I think i like this film because it is going to be about a tough and strong women and I think we need more of these women in movies. These are the sort of characters we need to break stereotypes.
