Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival took place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

AFI Holds Directing Workshop for Women Showcase

AFI's Directing Workshop for Women program will be holding a screening of eight short films all directed by women. The films are a result of a year-long fellowship with AFI, honoring those in the 2012 AFI DWW class.

Apply for This Athena Film Festival Workshop - Crafting a Short: How to Find Your Story and Make It a Movie

We are gearing up for the 3rd Athena Film Festival from February 7-10, 2013. We are very excited to be partnering with the American Film Institute's Directing Workshop for Women for a day of workshops and other activities to train more women in the directing field. If you are interested in getting into directing this is something you should apply for. These people know what thay are doing. They train successful women directors in TV and film.
