Women and Hollywood

Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival will take place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

As the trailers for The East continue to roll out and with its recent outing at SXSW, the buzz for Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij's tense thriller is growing.

The East, co-written by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij (who directed and previously collaborated with Marling on Sound of My Voice) centers around an ex-FBI agent (Marling) who goes undercover to infiltrate a group who targets major corporations that commit acts against the environment. Ellen Page also stars. The film has been receiving a lot of buzz at Sundance and the trailer looks very intriguing.

NY Mag's Vulture (which by the way has some of the most provocative and great reporting about pop culture) pissed me off earlier this week with their piece on Ellen Page's "asexual" wardrobe in Inception.
