Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival took place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Awards Roundup: Europe, Boston, LA, NY Online, British Indies, and IDAs

The first major award weekend yielded honors for directors Susanne Bier (Love is All You Need), Haifaa al-Mansour (Wadjda), Sarah Polley (Stories We Tell), Jehane Noujaim (The Square). Recognition also went to screenwriters Nicole Holofcener (who wrote and helmed Enough Said) and co-writer Julie Delpy (Before Midnight).

Directors Susanne Bier and Clio Barnard Nominated by European Film Awards, British Indie Awards

The European Film Awards and the Moet British Independent Film Awards recognized one female director apiece, Oscar-winning Danish director Susanne Bier's Love is All You Need, earned a nod for Best Comedy. Clio Barnard's The Selfish Giant earned the second-highest number of nominations at BIFA, including Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.

Three of the Five Nominees for EFA's Discovery Award Are Women

The European Film Academy announced the 5 nominees for their 2013 Discovery Award, which is given to recognize a director for their first feature film. Of the 5 nominated, 3 of the films are directed by women.

No Women Nominated for European Film Awards in Major Categories

Last week The European Film Awards announced their nominees for their annual awards. Michael Haneke’s Amour and Steve McQueen’s Shame picked up a majority of the nominations.
