Why Society Needs Feminism

I found this through my twitter feed today and think it is appropriate and is a good thought for the weekend.  I think this should answer all the naysayers who think young women aren't feminists.  This is one of the most feminist things I have read in a long time and it's from a young woman -- Caitlin M. O'Donnell at Drake University.

Aisha Tyler Masterfully Calls Out Her Haters

We are just so impressed with Aisha Tyler, comedian and actress.  Turns out Tyler is also a huge gamer and while some folks in the community were receptive about her being invited to host the 2012 E3 press conference, other were not so pleased.  In typical troll fashion, she received a ton of comments complaining that she knew nothing about gaming. Tyler responded to her haters on Facebook in a perfect takedown of their "complaints." Even though this is a year old, it is extremely relevant and brave.

Guest Post: The Appearing Female Magician - Desperate Acts of Magic

When I was seven, my parents took me to a magic shop at Pier 39 in San Francisco. I bought my first magic trick, the Imp Bottle. I loved playing with it. Not long after that, my parents bought me a magic set with over 100 tricks. I performed just about every single one of them for the kids at my eight-year old birthday party. Some of them didn't always work right and I'm not sure the audience was completely attentive but I had fun exploring the mechanics of all the tricks. Years passed and I met many girls who were involved in community theater, but none involved with magic. Without any mentors or peers to encourage me, that magic set ended up in the closet.

Remembering Mary Thom

The feminist movement suffered a huge loss this weekend with the death of Mary Thom.  Mary Thom was a long time editor at Ms. Magazine where she arrived in 1972, and rose through the ranks to be its executive editor.  She literally wrote the book on Ms. Magazine's history with Inside Ms.: 25 Years of the Magazine and the Feminist Movement.

Rosario Dawson Gives Some Real Talk on the Reality for Actresses

In a recent interview, Rosario Dawson gave some honest talk about the disturbing reality of being an actress in Hollywood. She says she's come to meetings with producers with them looking at pictures of actresses on websites for so-called inspiration. However, if those pictures aren't inspiring enough, Dawson says that an actress might not get hired.

Cross Post: The Host: Less Anti-Feminist than Twilight, but Hardly a Sisterhood Manifesta

I readily admit I did not read The Host. I couldn't face it after immersing myself in all things Twilight while researching my book Seduced by Twilight. I started it, but less than 20 pages in I couldn't stomach any more of Stephenie Meyer's purple, flaccid prose. No, I agree with Nicki Gerlach--that "Meyer is not a particularly concise or elegant writer, never saying in one sentence what she could hammer at for three."
