Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival took place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Women Attain Their Highest Level of Leadership at the Academy

Each year the Academy votes in members of the governors board. The board members represent each of the Academy's 16 branches which includes the newly created costume designers branch. As of this year there are three board members for each branch. Members must be re-elected when their terms are up, and can serve three consecutive terms and then they are termed out.

Athena Film Festival Honors Gale Anne Hurd with The Laura Ziskin Lifetime Achievement Award

The third annual Athena Film Festival, co-founded by our own Melissa Silverstein, has announced the recipients for this year’s Athena Film Festival Awards, which honor actors, directors, producers and others involved in the film community for their contributions and leadership.

Lifetime Unveils 2011-2012 Slate of Programs

Lifetime which a couple of years ago had some strong dramas is trying to get back into the business of scripted shows. They network has renewed Army Wives for a sixth season and ordered a Modern Love which follows a male science writer who gets handed the reigns of the Modern Love column from Jenny Bicks. Also, Drop Dead Diva returns for a third season this summer and they are still in the Project Runway business.
