Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival took place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Wonder Woman Fan Film Shows Up Hollywood

With superheroes dominating the box office and pop culture landscape, it's simply astonishing that there hasn't been a female-lead film added the mix yet. While Marvel has a dearth of male superheroes at their fingertips, DC's most famous heroes are arguably Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

Guest Post: Filming the Unimaginable

I remember feeling scared of entering the room Neil was in, of approaching him. Maybe part of this was fear of seeing his suffering, but it was also disquiet about the ethics of filming him. Morag MacKinnon, the co-director and I, had come for a brief visit. She was an old pal of the family, but this was the first time I'd met Neil.
