Women and Hollywood

Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival will take place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

32nd Annual Muse Awards Recipients

News

New York Women in Film and Television have announced the recipients of their annual Muse awards. Actresses Mariska Hargitay (of Law and Order fame) and Lucy Liu (currently starring on Elementary) will be honored, as well as documentary filmmaker Lisa F. Jackson (known for the HBO documentary Sex Crimes Unit).

Hollywood Feminist of the Day: Mariska Hargitay

Mariska founded the charity Joyful Heart Foundation which is up for a $500,000 Chase Community Giving Grant. Joyful Heart's mission is to heal, educate and empower survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse and to shed light into the darkness that surrounds these issues. They also have a website endthebacklog.org that is educating people and advocating to change the unbelievable backlog of rape kits that have not been tested.
