Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival took place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

The Third Annual Lilly Awards

In advance of the Tony Awards next Sunday where no women writers were nominated, The Third Annual Lilly Awards (named after playwright Lillian Hellman) were handed out in NYC. The awards are conferred by the Committee for Recognizing Women in Theater which is made up of 25 professionals working in the theatre.

Marsha Norman to Write Play Dealing with Plight of Women and Girls

The United Nations Department of Public Information, through its Creative Community Outreach Initiative (CCOI) has joined forces with Theatre for Humans a producing entity out of LA to create a play based on stories of women and girls throughout the world. The play will be "dedicated to telling the poignant stories of those impacted by current global issues."
