As we had previously reported, McCarthy was making her directorial debut with Tammy, a film that she co-wrote alongside her writing partner/husband Ben Falcone, who will be co-directing as well.

Oscars Rehire Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron

While we here at Women and Hollywood had many problems with the Oscars executive produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the Academy is very pleased that the show was able to bring in that coveted young male demographic.  They are so happy that they made the early decision to rehire Meron and Zadan to be the 2014 producers for the event which will take place next March 2.

Melissa McCarthy on SNL

Melissa McCarthy hosted SNL for the second time this past weekend.  While I don't think that this show was as strong as her first hosting gig, it was far better than so many of the other hosts in recent memory.

Films Targeting Women Dominate the Box Office This Weekend

Maybe we can call this a bit of poetic justice but it looks like the big boys are floundering and the girls are on the rise.  This weekend, the female targeted, yet not very feminist, Oz - The Great and Powerful was again number 1 at the box office.  (I haven't seen the movie but here are two pieces about the film.  Why ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ Is A Major Step Back For Witches and Women and “Oz the Great and Powerful” Rekindles the Notion That Women Are Wicked.)

Hollywood Sexist of the Day: Rex Reed

Rex Reed’s review of Identity Thief in The New York Observer is a scathing takedown of the film, which is fine. He's entitled to his opinion.  He's a critic.  What’s not fine, and what he's not entitled to, is his continual harping star's Melissa McCarthy and her weight.
