Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival took place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

10 Films from Women Directors, Screenwriters, or Stars Added to National Film Registry

The National Film Registry has announced its 2013 list of "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" films to be preserved by the Library of Congress, and 10 of its 25 selections were directed by, written by, or starred women.

3 of 25 Films Inducted into National Film Registry Directed by Women

The Librarian of Congress, James Billington, picked the next batch of 25 films to be inducted into the National Film Registry. 3 of the 25 films chosen by Billington are directed by women. There are several women centric films including Breakfast at Tiffany’s and One Survivor Remembers.
