Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 5th annual festival will take place from February 5-8, 2015 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Hollywood Reporter Drama Showrunner Panel -- Four White Guys and Two Women of Color

It's great to see Shonda Rhimes and Veena Sud here. Honestly, I don't know how they could have done a panel with drama showrunners without including Rhimes since she has three shows on the air. Is there anyone else with three shows on the air?

Sneak Preview: Shonda Rhimes' Scandal

Thanks to Shonda Rhimes next week will be a milestone week. It will be the first time in 30 years that a single African American woman will be the lead on a network TV show. (Jada Pinkett Smith was the lead on Hawthorne on cable) The show -- Scandal -- is based on the life of Washington "fixer" Judy Smith who in the past also worked for President George H.W. Bush.

Shonda Rhimes Is Still at the Top of Her Game

I know that at times Grey's Anatomy seems like a tortured soap opera. But I also know that I would take that soap opera any day over some of the other crap on TV, and that is because Shonda Rhimes and her team continue to push the envelope in so many ways.
