Women and Hollywood

Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival will take place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Women Directed and Written Projects Chosen for Sundance Institute's June Directors and Screenwriters Labs

The Sundance Institute announced the 13 projects chosen for their prestigious June Director and Screenwriter Labs which take place from May 27-June 27. The program has fellows work with creative advisors, actors and crews to shoot and edit scenes from their screenplays. They get the opportunity to workshop their work.

The Sundance Institute has picked 12 projects to participate in their January Screenwriters Lab. The workshop provides writers the opportunity to find financing and other resources for their films. It also gives them a shot at participating in the famed festival. Of the 12 projects selected, 6 are written or co-written by women. This continues Sundance’s 2013 streak of having women majorly represented.

Last week was Independent Film Week here in NYC. There are a wide variety of events, panels and of course parties. I was able to attend the Chicken and Egg Pictures event (which was beyond packed) that honored the Sundance Documentary Film Program and Fund.

The Sundance Institute recently announced their 27 recipients for development, production and audience engagement grants. Of the 27 grant recipients, 15 of the projects are led by women or include women on their teams.
