This weekend, the fifth and final installment of the Twilight franchise opened, and to no one’s surprise, killed at the box office. Conversations about the film will undoubtedly focus on the business it did (massive), whether or not it was any good (it wasn’t, really, but I had a great time), and what the fans were like opening night (enthusiastic, as always), but there’s a much smaller, more personal story to be told by each individual fan, and that’s what three fully grown women talked about on their way to see Breaking Dawn, Part 2 this weekend in a Midwestern suburb.

In just one month The Twilight Saga film franchise will come to an end. Oh sure we may see spin-offs, reboots (probably in a different medium) and/or quasi-sequels in some form in another, but the five-part Edward/Bella saga will come to its apparent climax. We can argue that few if any of the entries (including the unseen final chapter) were any good. We can argue their morality and/or philosophy and debate what (mixed) messages the core audience took from the series as a whole. But one cannot deny the cultural impact of the series.

Today I learned an important lesson which I probably already should have known. The people who care about all things Twilight -- the fans of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are intense. These people -- it seems they are mostly women - are about as intractable as the Israelis and the Palestinians.

The media stoning of Kristen Stewart, of Twilight fame, has been going on for about four weeks now. About a month ago, she was pictured having a fling, which she called a “momentary indiscretion,” with the married director of Snow White and the Huntsman, Rupert Sanders. What she did was wrong, she apologized, and it seems as though she's been in hiding for a few weeks. She's been branded a “slut,” a “whore,” and a “trampire” mostly by women, but also by a couple famous men. It's all very disheartening to watch. Time and again, we get a chance, as a society, to prove we're not petty and spiteful and we fail miserably.

Fame is a bitch for Kristen Stewart. She used to be the kind of actress where as she said she could sit on her stoop and smoke pot in her underwear with her boyfriend and dog and nobody would care. No more. Since she hit it big she has created a barely tolerable relationship with the press that seems to be a mutual hateathon. She doesn't smile a lot (we do like our young women very happy and smiley!) and they get back at her by making it seem that she is perpetually pissed off.
