Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival took place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

70th Venice International Film Festival Announces Line Up

The 70th annual Venice International Film Festival announced their line up today and it's very thin on women directed films.

Fill the Void Written and Directed by Rama Burshtein Gets Picked Up by Sony Pictures Classics

The team at Sony PIctures Classics has been very busy since Toronto and they added another women directed film Fill the Void written and directed by Rama Burshtein to their list of acquisitions. The film will be Israel's submission to the Academy Award for best foreign film having won seven awards including best director, best picture and best screenplay at Israel's Ophirs (their version of the Academy Awards.)

Women Directors Abound at the Venice Film Festival

The news on the prevalence of women directors coming out out of the Venice Film Festival is in stark contrast to the different conversation that came out of Cannes just several months ago. Festival director Alberto Barbera claims that they just programed the movies and then afterwards realized that about 30% of the movies they picked were directed by women. Here's what he said:

4 Women Directors in Competition at 2012 Venice International Film Festival

Contrary to the folks at Cannes who seem to not be able to find any women directed movies for their competition, Alberto Barbara has gotten 4 films with women directors (or co-directors) in the competition.

Women Directors Make Up Half of the 27th International Film Critics Week at the Venice Film Festival

The 69th Annual Venice International Film Festival announced the lineup for the 27th International Film Critics Week (SIC), the festival’s independent section.  In this year’s selection of films, women directors are prominently featured, comprising 4 of the 8 films (the ninth film, Water, is a collective) in competition.

Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist to Open The Venice Film Festival
