Women and Hollywood

Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival will take place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Jenna Elfman to Host Women in Film 2012 Crystal + Lucy Awards June 12

Actress Jenna Elfman who will return to TV next season as the First Lady in the comedy 1600 Penn will be the host of the annual Crystal + Lucy Awards. If I lived in LA I would so be at this event supporting the work of Women in Film. It's one of the rare occasions to celebrate women in the business.

The Oscar nominations this morning give us another year where there are no women directors included in the list. This year we won't see Kathryn Bigelow up on the stage giving out the best director award to the next winner. When she won two years ago there was much hope that the numbers of women directing in Hollywood would get better.
