Adult World

Adult World is a satirical comedy about an eccentric young woman, Amy Anderson (Emma Roberts), who has just come out of university convinced she's going to be a famous poet. Unemployed and saddled with debt, she moves back in with her parents, who force her to get a job. Desperate and armed with a poetry degree and not much else, she takes the only job she can find, working in an adult book store called Adult World. Meanwhile, desperate to get her poems published, Amy stalks an aging punk poet figure named Rat Billings (John Cusack), "one of the greatest poets of the early 90s." Rat reluctantly agrees to mentor her. As Amy makes new friends, including a drag queen named Rubia, the elderly couple who own Adult World, and Alex, the charming and quirky young manager, she learns that she might not be the voice of her generation after all. (Rotten Tomatoes)

Child's Pose

A sharply crafted family thriller, Child's Pose pivots on a riveting performance by Luminita Gheorghiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Beyond the Hills) as a steely, upper-class Bucharest architect determined to keep her thirty-something deadbeat son out of jail after a deadly car crash. How far will she go to convince the police, eyewitnesses and even the victim's family that her son was not recklessly speeding? A spellbinding drama of social commentary and psychological realism, this caustic look into the corrupt heart of the Eastern European bourgeoisie twists into a brilliantly ambiguous study of obsessive motherly love. Endless Love - Co-Written and Directed by Shana Feste

Director Shana Feste (Country StrongThe Greatest) helms the first woman-directed wide release of the year. In this teen romance timed for Valentine's Day, a rich girl and a poor boy are kept apart by her troubled dad. In my review for TheWrap.com, I noted that "[Alex] Pettyfer delivers the puppy eyes, [while Gabriella] Wilde keepsEndless Love from drowning in a vat of schmaltz." (Inkoo Kang)

Easy Money: Hard to Kill - Written by Maria Karlsson

Though he's currently headlining the new Robocop remake, Swedish star Joel Kinnaman got his big break in the thriller Easy Money, an interlocking drama that shows the invisible but destructive relationship between low-level drug dealers and the aristocratic banksters who profit off their blood money. In my Los Angeles Times review, I noted that its sequel "forges new ground on the rich character histories developed in the first film, [but] they feel like a random trio assigned the same punishment whose lives eventually intersect — and as such, the emotional moments never land." (Inkoo Kang)

Jimmy P. - Co-Written by Julie Peyr

A Native American Veteran suffering from a series of psychological issues develops a deeply powerful friendship with his progressive French psychoanalyst as they discover and attempt to understand the source of his illness. (IMDB)
