Women and Hollywood

Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival will take place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Women-Created, Sitcom Voices Silenced: Apartment 23 and Ben and Kate Pulled From Line Up

News

This was a sad week in television for me. Two of my favorite sitcoms, Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 and Ben and Kate were pulled from ABC and Fox’s schedules effective immediately. As of now there are no plans to air any remaining episodes and while both networks have yet to confirm cancellation, Twitter buzz from both creators and stars of both shows indicates the inevitable.

Co-written with Kaling’s former The Office co-worker Brent Forrester, Gillespie follows a woman whose debilitating low self-esteem leads her to date a string of terrible losers. Fall TV season has arrived. As we excitedly dive into a fresh season, what is the state of female participation in creative content? I gathered a list of new shows and looked at their creative teams, noting the number of women that serve as show creators, writers, directors, or producers. And gosh, the results were depressing.
