Women and Hollywood

Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival will take place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Emmanuelle Riva, Lynne Ramsay and Juno Temple Win at 2013 BAFTAS

News

On Sunday, the BAFTAS held their annual awards ceremony. As awards season comes to a close, there weren’t many upsets but a couple interesting things of note. Emmanuelle Riva won lead actress for Amour. Brenda Chapman won for best animated film with Brave. Lynne Ramsay’s short film Swimmer won. And Juno Temple won the EE Rising Star Award.

On the heels of learning that 4 out of the 5 nominated for BAFTA’s Rising Star Award are women, comes the full list of the 2013 BAFTA awards nominees. Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal and Zero Dark Thirty are there for Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture, as is Jessica Chastain for Best Actress. Judi Dench is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Skyfall. Lynne Ramsay got a nomination for her short film, Swimmer. Writer/Director of I Am Nasrine, Tina Gharavi was nominated for Outstanding Debut by a British writer, director or producer.
