Women and Hollywood


Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival took place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Sarah Polley, Nicole Holofcener, Sandra Bullock Big Winners of AWFJ Awards

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has announced their award winners, among whom Sarah Polley ("Stories We Tell") was the only winner of a category not specifically designated for a women. Nicole Holofcener swept the writing and direcing categories in the "Female Focus" portion of the awards for her winsome romantic comedy "Enough Said."

Awards Roundup: Europe, Boston, LA, NY Online, British Indies, and IDAs

The first major award weekend yielded honors for directors Susanne Bier (Love is All You Need), Haifaa al-Mansour (Wadjda), Sarah Polley (Stories We Tell), Jehane Noujaim (The Square). Recognition also went to screenwriters Nicole Holofcener (who wrote and helmed Enough Said) and co-writer Julie Delpy (Before Midnight).

TIFF 13- Dispatch 1: Mid-Life Women in Crisis

This is my third Toronto Film Festival and I am starting to understand how to manage it. It is an endurance test. You need to go whole hog one day and then back off a little the next in order to make it a whole week. Also it takes a while to put into words what you are seeing.
